  2. Scroll to the ‘How do I apply for this SRD Grant’ section
  3. Click on the yellow button across the screen that says ‘click here to apply online’
  4. You will enter your mobile number
  5. Click on ‘send SMS’
  6. Then you enter the one-time pin from the SMS
  7. Continue the step-by-step application process online

  1. Save the number 082 046 8553 as a contact on your phone
  2. Send a Whatsapp to this number (you can send “hello” or “hi”)
  3. You will then receive a reply, you can reply with “help”
  4. You will be given various options, reply with “4”
  5. This will lead you to the Unathi Sassa platform message, reply with “SRD”
  6. You confirm whether you are applying for yourself or someone else
  7. You will start the step-by-step application via Whatsapp (submit your full name and ID number)

  2. The SRD form will be sent to you via email to fill in

What you will need

  1. ID number or Department of Home Affairs refugee permit number
  2. Name and Surname (as captured on your ID document)
  3. Gender and disability
  4. Banking details (bank name and account number will be requested after application is approved)
  5. Contact details (cellphone number)
  6. Residential address (no proof required)
  7. Applications are free

How is the Grant paid out?

  • Bank Account: Directly to the bank account you provide – confirmation of your bank account will be requested electronically
  • Cash: If you apply without having a bank account, you will have the option to receive cash at an ATM
  • CashSend Services: Systems like eWallet for FNB or CashSend for ABSA, require only your cellphone number to withdraw money at the ATM
  • Post Office: Receive grant at the Post Office
  • Shoprite Group: At Checkers, USave, OK and Shoprite - a confirmation pin will be send to the cell phone number registered in Sassa database

The SRD grant is due to come to an end in March 2023. Every month until then the Sassa R350 grant applications remain open and will be paid out on the 15th.

New Rules for the Social Relief of Distress Grant

The Special Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for the unemployed is now managed under new rules as per the Social Assistance Act and not the State of Disaster Act, since the State of Disaster has come to an end.

Under the new rules, existing beneficiaries are urged to reapply.

Once you have applied through one of the following methods, you do not need to reapply again. You will receive confirmation as soon as your application is successfully submitted.

The applications received will be approved / rejected before the 15th of the month. You will receive an SMS informing you if your application was approved or not.

SRD Grant will only be eligible to people

  • Currently residing in SA
  • Between the ages of 18-60 years
  • Unemployed
  • Not receiving any other social grant
  • Not receiving employment insurance benefit
  • Not receiving NSFAS money or other financial aid
  • Not receiving any other Covid-19 government support
  • Not a resident of a government funded or subsidised institution
  • Caregivers who are not receiving any grant on their own behalf will also be eligible to receive the grant this time around.
  • SA citizen, permanent resident, refugee registered with the Home Affairs database, holders of special permits or asylum seekers with valid VISA
